Last night, Ashley and I were at Barnes and Noble. I had just given up on my homework and resigned to leafing through a pile of photography magazines. I was flipping through a special Black and White edition of Digital Photographer when a familiar photo caught my eye... it was mine! My heart skipped a beat. I probably did a quadruple-take, and scanned over the picture multiple times before I could believe my eyes. MY PHOTO (a partial nude self portrait no-less) was #12 in a series of tips on black and white photography, they were using it to illustrate lighting! HAH!
When I told Ashley, she couldn't believe it either. She made me lift up my shirt in the middle of the cafe to show her two distinguishing marks on my chest. What an unbelievable stroke of luck that I even happened to look in the magazine... I would have bought it if it didn't cost $30. Unbelievable!
If anyone actually reads this, they'll be wondering whether the use of the photo was legal or not, and whether I got paid for it. The answer is yes, it was legal, and yes I got paid for it. I've sold stock photography online for at least a few years now and it's perfectly legitimate for someone to download my images and use them in books, magazines, advertising, etc. This photo would have been sold at print resolution for $6. I see $1.26 of that $6, however, I can sell rights to as many people as I want, this particular image has been downloaded 41 times... at least ONE of which was published in an international magazine!
