Tonight, while waiting at a stop signal, I witnessed someone drop a balled-up Dunkin' Donuts bag out their window and onto the road. My blood boiled, but despite all the possible reactions running through my head, I did nothing.
This is not the type of person I had myself figured out to be in my head. In my head, I wouldn't have thought about it, I would have stepped right out of the car, walked up to the next car and picked up the trash. "You dropped this..." In reality, I did nothing. I thought about honking, then about getting out of the car, and then about the light turning green. The light turned green and that was it. Now I feel guilty and frustrated with both ignorant assholes and myself.
I'll have a second chance at this I'm sure. Even then... what can a complete stranger say to someone like this to make them reconsider next time? "You dropped this" doesn't seem like it would be terribly effective. I'd honestly be surprised if the person didn't just throw it out the window once they started driving again. What is it then? "I live here and we'd appreciate it if you kept your trash in your home." Throwing the trash in their face or just hitting them in the face is another tempting solution, though entirely unrealistic and ineffective.
Whatever the case, something is better than nothing.
